How to Get Out of a Bad Mood

As human beings, we have a wide range of emotions. All of us get in a bad mood, once in a while. It’s inevitable. Eventually, we do get out of it. Often, it takes a while for us to get out of the bad, and little bit of bad mood can hamper in all aspects of our life. Most of the time, we don’t even understand the cause of our bad mood.

Tips to Get Out of a Bad Mood

The first step to getting out of it is to understand the reason behind it and act on it. If you can follow on these tips, you will definitely get out of the bad mood sooner.

1. Identify your problem

Find out what’s been bothering you. Usually, the reason is fairly simple. You might be feeling down just because you are hungry or lonely or have been working all day. In that case, all you need is a change of scenario. If you are feeling hungry – get something to eat, feeling lonely – go and hang out with some friends. The solutions to our daily mood downs are often much simpler than we consider it to be. If you are severely depressed, find someone to talk to about it, perhaps a therapist.

2. Atone your actions

We, as humans, are used to making a mistake. Sometimes we forget a loved one’s birthday, and sometimes we forget a meeting. Simple actions like these can take us to a guilt-trip. Once you have realized that the guilt is why you are in the bad mood, do not waste time making excuses, send a quick text showing them how sorry you are and that you are eager to make it up to them. You will instantly feel better. We often feel bad when we are unable to put our best effort or do certain tasks we are supposed to. Promise yourself you will put in your best effort from then on. Make a note of remaining tasks and set a deadline. That alone, will make you feel a lot better.

3. Stay away from social media

Social media is a great way to stay in touch with everyone you know. But, when you are not feeling so good about yourself, it’s better to stay away from it. It has been seen that a status or post from a friend about their tragedy can easily influence you. In that way, social media can be a real mood-downer. If you are in a bad mood and bored, find something else to do that does not include being updated with someone else’s sadness or tragedy.

4. Change of scenario

You might be feeling bad because you have been working hard all day. It’s natural to feel down and exhausted when you have been doing same thing and staying in the same place for a while. Take a walk or go for a ride. Make a change of scenario. Researchers have also found that environment has a direct influence on our mood. If you are in a bad mood, simply going to the next room and lying on a different couch can prove helpful. Try dimming the lights if they are bright and vice versa, to change your thought process.

5. Get something to eat

We often neglect or don’t even consider how hunger can affect our mood. If it has been a while since you last ate, get something to eat. Scientists have reported that food can directly influence our mood. Even if you are not hungry grabbing a quick snack might help you lighten up. Dark chocolates, in particular, helps release ‘feel good’ chemicals in the brain, literally.

6. Find a pleasant distraction

Distract yourself from your hassle. Instead of sitting idle and allowing devil to play with your head, do something that you enjoy. You can put on some music and even dance to it if you feel like it. Watch your favorite TV shows, read a book or play some games. The objective is to keep yourself busy enough to forget about the bad mood.

7. Exercise

Exercise has been proven useful in taking care of the spoiled mood. Maybe it’s the adrenaline that comes with the working out, but working out will definitely lit up your mood. Hit the gym if you have easy access, even if not, do some push-ups and pull-ups. Try and push yourself to your limit. Exercise will make you healthy and happy.

8. Take a nap

Lack of sleep also tends to have a severe effect in our daily mood. If you haven’t been able to get enough sleep, you will not feel energetic throughout the day, both body and mind. Take a quick nap, even if it’s just 15-20 minutes. Maybe what you need is re-energizing yourself. Drink some cool water and splash your face with it after the nap. You should be re-charged to take on rest of the day.
